You are most likely using social media for recruiting. And, according to many surveys, you are probably also using it for pre-screening applicants. But are you also using it for the selection of candidates? Digital Advertising Agency R/GA wanted to try a new kind of job interview: The Social Interview. They asked summer internship candidates to allow them to post three questions to their Facebook wall—not for them to answer, but for their friends to answer.

Click here to view the embedded video.

The results? The collective answers provided a fuller picture of the candidate, and a unique portrait of them for both R/GA and their own social network. It also stimulated media discussion outside of Facebook. With thousands of answers posted, they discovered some of the most young, social media savvy minds around.

What do you think? Is this selection-method just a popularity contest? Or does it really help in identifying the best or most creative students? Would you use this approach?

Each quarter ManpowerGroup conducts research to measure employment trends* in 41 of the world’s largest labor markets. Nearly 65,000 employers have been interviewed across 41 countries and territories to measure employer hiring expectations between January and March 2012. Despite continuing economic challenges and widespread uncertainty in the global labor market, employers in 31 of the 41 countries and territories ManpowerGroup surveys expect to add to their workforces in varying degrees during the first three months of the year.

Employers in India, Brazil, Taiwan and Panama report the strongest first-quarter hiring plans globally. Meanwhile, those in Greece, Hungary and Italy report the weakest Net Employment Outlooks. Hiring optimism weakens from three months ago in 30 countries and territories and softens in 23 countries and territories compared to this time last year. Debt issues in Europe continue to impact employer hiring plans around the globe, including those in China—where Europe represents their largest export market. China’s considerable year-over-year decline in employer confidence is also attributable to deliberate efforts by the Chinese government to cool down the economy. Meanwhile, in the U.S., forecasts improve or remain stable in nine of 13 sectors from both three months ago and last year. And in Japan, employers report the country’s strongest hiring plans since the third quarter of 2008.

Regionally, employers throughout Asia Pacific continue to report positive Net Employment Outlooks. Job seekers in India are likely to benefit from the most vigorous hiring pace reported among the eight countries and territories in the region, with aggressive recruitment of IT talent expected to heat up competition for talent in an already booming labor market. However, compared to last year at this time, hiring plans soften in six countries and territories, including China’s notable drop in employer confidence. Hiring intentions among Japanese employers are the least robust in the region, despite slight improvements in the Net Employment Outlook from the previous quarter and 12 months ago.

Hiring plans remain positive in all 10 countries ManpowerGroup surveys in the Americas. Labor markets are expected to improve or remain relatively stable in six of 10 countries in a quarter-over-quarter comparison. The year-over-year comparison is split, with Net Employment Outlooks strengthening in five countries and weakening in five. Regional hiring expectations are strongest in Brazil and weakest in the U.S. where employers, nonetheless, expect hiring activity to slightly improve in the next three months.

In the EMEA region, hiring trends remain mixed with employers reporting positive hiring intentions in 13 of the 23 countries surveyed. Individual Outlooks decline in 18 of 23 countries from three months ago and weaken in 12 where year-over-year comparisons are possible. Regional hiring plans are strongest in Turkey, Israel, Germany, Norway and Sweden, and weakest in Greece as well as Hungary, where employers expect to put the brakes on hiring in the next three months.

According to the latest Manpower Employment Outlook Survey released today by ManpowerGroup, the Net Employment Outlook for Quarter 1 2012 is +9%, an increase from the +7% Outlook during Quarter 4 2011, and stable compared to one year ago when the Outlook was +8%. This represents the most promising hiring Outlook since 2008.

This quarter’s survey reveals:

Nine Straight Quarters of Employment Growth: According to seasonally adjusted data, U.S. employers have now conveyed a steady, but positive overall hiring Outlook for nine straight quarters, following three quarters of pessimistic employment plans in 2009. This is the first increase in quarter-over-quarter hiring intentions since Quarter 1 2011.

Historically High Level of Employers Unsure About Plans: Seven percent of employers report they are unsure of their hiring intentions going into the new year. The rise from three to seven percent is the most significant quarterly increase since 1977 and represents the highest percentage of uncertain employers surveyed since 2005.

Varying Regional Strength: Employers in all four U.S. regions surveyed report a positive Net Employment Outlook, with those in the Midwest region reporting the strongest at +10%. Supported by an increase in the Manufacturing industry sectors, this represents the most favorable hiring Outlook for the Midwest since Quarter 3 2008. Employers in the West region continue to offer the weakest Outlook with +6%.

Pockets of Considerable Increases: Employers in 45 states report positive hiring intentions for Quarter 1 2012, as was the case in Quarter 4 2011. The Outlook in Florida and South Dakota, which were among the weaker labor markets one quarter ago, improved significantly. Now the two states are among the brightest hiring forecasts.

“Slow, but steady momentum has improved employer confidence, which is likely why more employers are planning to hire in the first quarter,” said Jonas Prising, ManpowerGroup president of the Americas. “This uptick is encouraging, but the historically high proportion of employers that are unsure of their hiring plans indicates continued uncertainty about the future and ongoing caution when it comes to staffing plans.”

Of the more than 18,000 employers surveyed, 14 percent anticipate an increase in staff levels in their Quarter 1 2012 hiring plans, while nine percent expect a decrease in payrolls, resulting in a Net Employment Outlook of +5%. When seasonally adjusted, the Net Employment Outlook becomes +9%. Seventy percent of employers expect no change in their hiring plans. The final seven percent of employers indicate they are undecided about their hiring intentions.

“There’s no doubt that employers need more hiring flexibility, but at the same time, they continue to struggle to find talent with mission-critical skills,” said Prising. “On one hand you have CEOs starting and stopping hiring based on market trends, but on the other hand their hiring managers are struggling to find the talent with specific skills. These dynamics, the lack of demand for products and services and the ongoing skills mismatch, profoundly impact hiring decisions. With growing uncertainty, employers rely on contingent labor more and more as they move people in and out of their businesses as demand for their products and services fluctuates.”

Hiring Outlooks for Industry Sectors and Regions

For Quarter 1 2012, employers have a positive Outlook in 12 of the 13 industry sectors included in the survey: Mining (+16%), Leisure & Hospitality (+14%), Wholesale & Retail Trade (+9%), Professional & Business Services (+9%), Durable Goods Manufacturing (+8%), Information (+8%), Financial Activities (+8%), Nondurable Goods Manufacturing (+4%), Other Services (+4%), Education & Health Services (+3%), Transportation & Utilities (+2%) and Government (+1%). Employers in one industry sector have a slightly negative Outlook: Construction (-7%). When the industry sector data is compared quarter-over-quarter, employers in the Leisure & Hospitality sector anticipate a moderate hiring increase, while employers in the Government sector anticipate a slight hiring increase. Staff levels are expected to remain relatively stable among employers in eight industry sectors: Mining, Durable Goods Manufacturing, Transportation & Utilities, Information, Financial Activities, Professional & Business Services, Education & Health Services and Other Services. The Construction and Nondurable Goods Manufacturing sectors anticipate a slight decrease in the hiring pace, while Wholesale & Retail Trade employers intend to moderately decrease hiring.

A positive Net Employment Outlook is reported in all four U.S. regions. Quarter-over-quarter, plans to add employees are slightly up among employers in the Northeast and remain essentially the same among employers in the Midwest, South and West. Compared to one year ago at this time, employers in all regions project a relatively stable hiring environment for Quarter 1 2012.

A new national survey from Jobvite reveals more than 22 million Americans used social networks to find their most recent job opportunity – up 7.7 million from last year’s survey. One in six members of the workforce say an online social network was one of the sources they used to find a job, and those with more contacts get better results. With the national unemployment rate at 9.0% in October, fierce competition has 54% of all job seekers using Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter in their hunt for work.

Jobvite’s Social Job Seeker Survey 2011 polled more than 1,200 members of the workforce in a national online survey. More than two-thirds (69%) are job seekers – people either actively looking for work or employed but open to a new job. The survey provides the first in-depth look at which networks get the most job hunting activity, how the power of being social can lead to employment and which job seekers make the most of social networking.

Facebook Has More Job Seeking Volume Overall, LinkedIn and Twitter See Higher Engagement Rate for Job Hunting

Nearly nine out of 10 job seekers (86%) have a social media profile. Facebook has the majority with 84% of job seekers, followed by 39% using Twitter and 35% using LinkedIn. Nearly 1/3 of job seekers (31%) have a profile on all three networks.

Facebook has the highest volume of job seeking activity overall, with more people receiving job referrals, updating profiles and making new professional connections. But more than 1/3 of job seekers that have a Facebook profile don’t use it in any way to look for work. On the other hand, nearly all job seekers with a profile on LinkedIn and almost ¾ of those on Twitter leverage their networks for job hunting.

Job Seeking on Facebook:

The Jobvite app makes job referral part of daily activity on Facebook.

When using Facebook, employees automatically see notifications about friends who match open jobs based on the professional and educational information in their profiles.

They can search their networks for matches to jobs at their companies, invite friends to apply, refer friends and automatically get credit for referrals.

Jobseekers can find referrals for jobs

48% of all job seekers (63% of those with a profile) have done at least one social job hunting activity on Facebook in the last year.

One in five job seekers added professional information to their Facebook profile in the past year.

16% received a job referral from a Facebook friend.

18.4 Million Americans credit Facebook as a source that led to their current job.

56% of Facebook-using job seekers are male, 64% are under the age of 40, 36% earn more than $75,000 and 42% are college graduates.

Job Seeking on LinkedIn:

26% of all job seekers (88% of those with a profile) have used LinkedIn to hunt for work in the past year.

15% have updated LinkedIn with professional information.

9% received a job referral from a LinkedIn contact.

10.2 Million Americans credit LinkedIn as a source that led to their current job.

69% of LinkedIn-using job seekers are male, 53% are under the age of 40, 54% earn more than $75,000 and 58% are college graduates.

Job Seeking on Twitter:

23% of all job seekers (71% of those with a profile) have leveraged Twitter in their job hunt.

8% have updated Twitter with professional information.

6% received a job referral through Twitter.

8 Million Americans credit Twitter as a source that led to their current job

65% of Twitter-using job seekers are male, 69% are under the age of 40, 48% earn more than $75,000 and 49% are college graduates.

“Super Social” Job Seekers with More Contacts Get Better Results

Jobvite’s Social Job Seeker Survey 2011 found a marked difference in job hunting activities and success when job seekers were “super social” – having more than 150 contacts on any single network. More than four out of 10 job seekers (41%) are super social on at least one network (mainly Facebook), and they do more social job hunting and get better results than their less social counterparts. More than ¼ (28%) of these super social job seekers found a job through online social networking.

37% of all job seekers are “super social” on Facebook, 10% on LinkedIn and 11% on Twitter.

58% of LinkedIn’s super social job seekers updated their profiles with professional information, 35% of Facebook’s and 35% of Twitter’s.

43% of LinkedIn’s super social job seekers received a job referral on the network, 32% of Twitter’s and 25% of Facebook’s.

51% of all super socials are male, 62% are under the age of 40, 42% earn more than $75,000 annually and 40% have a college degree.

Other significant online social network activity differences:

“Our new national survey shows that socially savvy job seekers have an advantage over their fellow job hunters and it’s paying off,” said Dan Finnigan, President and Chief Executive Officer of Jobvite. “While referrals are still the top source of new jobs, online social networks play an increasingly important role in job hunting today. The job referrals happening on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter benefit employers, job seekers and the economy overall.”

The polling company™, inc./WomanTrend conducted this nationwide online omnibus survey of 2,049 adults (aged 18+) on behalf of Jobvite. Fielded October 24-27, the survey included questions on current employment status (1,205 respondents were part of the American workforce) and the use of social networks to find job opportunities. Respondents for this survey were selected from an opt-in panel, and had expressed prior consent to participate in online surveys such as this. The demographics of this audience closely match the nationwide population of adults (age 18+) with respect to gender, age, and region, and race and ethnicity.
